5 Tips for Growth at a Property Management Conference

Author: Kasee Godwin
Date: 05.30.2023

Are you committed to growing your property management company? Then make sure to carve out some time to attend eminent industry conferences.

A well-run property management conference delivers exclusive and emerging industry insights, actionable professional education, and the ability to connect with property management insiders, thought leaders, solution providers, and peers.

It’s a few days concentrated on career and business development, with information tailored toward property management.

Sure, you can get some of that from blog posts, podcasts, trade pubs, and other media. But there’s nothing like in-person meetings and face-to-face mingling for stoking motivation, forming genuine connections, and fueling growth for your career and your business.

5 Tips for Making the Most of a Property Management Conference

Quality real estate conferences aim to be as value-filled as possible and most have a lot going on. It’s easy to end up wandering around and only having a surface-level experience.

It’s important to carefully utilize your time in order to capitalize on the best a conference has to offer.

1. Get the App

Attending a conference that’s developed its own app? Download it and put it to use.

Most conference apps include event schedules, floor plans, and program guides. These are handy to use for navigating floor plans, schedule planning, and learning more about sessions, speakers, vendors, and exhibits.

2. Upskill and Get Credentialed

Capitalize on the available education opportunities. Conferences want to stay as relevant as possible and most seek to provide industry-leading information.

Many of the sessions and courses put on by more established conferences can count towards industry-recognized professional designations. So pick up all the badges, diplomas, certificates, and credentials you can!

3. Tap Into Vendor Knowledge

Vendors aren’t just there to hand out brochures and peddle solutions. Suppliers that invest in attending conferences want to connect with their customers and provide real value.

Use your booth visits to consult with vendors on the business problems you’d like to solve and the outcomes you’d like to achieve. Leverage their insights on property management technology solutions.

Prior to attending a conference, it’s important to plan which vendors you’d like to meet with. Reach out and set up meetings with vendors and people of interest in the weeks leading up to the event so you can use your time wisely and ensure that you get face time with the people you need to.

4. Network, Network, Network

A property management conference puts thought leaders, experts, suppliers, investors, and fellow property managers together in one place.

This is an ideal time to network with each one of these demographics. Be open to engaging with people throughout the conference.

See what your peers and competitors are up to, pick the minds of thought leaders, forge new business relationships, and mingle with investors.

5. Memorize Some Conversation Guides

It will be much easier to network and interact with people if you have some conversation snippets in mind. So brush up on your elevator pitch, icebreakers, conversation starters and responses, and people skills.

The elevator pitch should cover who you are, what you do, and a little about why you’re attending or what you’d like to accomplish at the conference.

Be sure to think of some unique, creative, or insightful questions or topics to chat about. It could be about something going on in the industry or a point of view you have. This can help fill in awkward silences and create meaningful conversations with other industry professionals.

The Best Conferences for Property Managers to Attend

It seems like there are endless real estate conferences, seminars, events, and expos. Not all of them are ideal for property managers, but we’ve narrowed the field down to five can’t-miss conferences for multifamily property management.

Those are:

  • National Apartment Association’s Annual Apartmentalize
  • National Multifamily Housing Council’s OPTECH
  • Multifamily Social Media Summit
  • Apartment Innovation & Marketing Conference
  • IMN Conferences

National Apartment Association (NAA) Apartmentalize

The NAA Apartmentalize conference is a multi-family rental housing industry gathering.

It’s a fresh-feeling and interactive conference aimed at facilitating dynamic education, idea exchanges, and inspiration.

This year’s conference is happening from June 7-9, 2023. Apartmentalize is one of the more energetic real estate conferences, so try and make it if you can (and come say hi to us!).

OPTECH panelists come from both the private business sector and various government bodies.

If you want to hear from executive-level cross-industry leaders, this conference is for you. OPTECH 2023 takes place from November 1 to 3, at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas.

Multifamily Social Media Summit

The Multifamily Social Media Summit revolves around helping property managers of multifamily residences leverage social media, influencers, and content marketing to attract new renters.

This year’s conference covered topics like marketing through short-form videos, classic storytelling principles, how to use ChatGPT, and leveraging privacy regulations.

It’s one of the best conferences for property operators who want to bring in dynamic resident demographics.

Apartment Innovation & Marketing (AIM) Conference

The AIM conference is an energetic session focused on cutting-edge, tech-forward multifamily property marketing. This conference is all about embracing marketing technology and real estate innovation. Topics to look forward to include using AI, automation and new marketing, leasing, and logistics technologies.

This conference is essential for modern property managers. The 2023 event has already taken place but block out your schedule for May 5 to 8, 2024.

Regional IMN Conferences

The real estate division of the Information Management Network hosts regional rental property conferences throughout the year.
